Throughout history, the pearl has represented wisdom and purity. High quality pearls are noted for symmetry, luster, iridescence and hues of rose or lavender. The color of pearls varies with the type of mollusk and the water in which the pearls are grown.
Increased demand for pearls has led to the development of cultured pearls. These pearls are not imitation, they are a product of nature and have been supplemented by human intervention. Several varieties of cultured pearls are available.
