Sapphire colors range in hues of blue, pink, orange, yellow, green, purple, black and colorless. Stones range from transparent to opaque. Large sapphires are very rare.

The most desired sapphires once came from Kashmir, India. Demand is high for faceted and cabochon cuts. Intersecting hollow channels coming from three directions causes the asterism in the star sapphire.
