Granulation dates as early as 185 BC. Through a process known as fusion welding, small round balls of metal (gold, silver or copper) are bonded to a contacting surface. From a molten state, the metal granules are joined together in a variety of beaded arrangements and patterns.
Several metallurgical techniques are employed to skillfully join granules of metal to a base. The granulation process produces an intricate, textured beaded work that captures the character of the ancient world.
