This unique men’s ring features a black opal set in a hand-engraved, textured yellow gold band. It was made for a client from Kirkland, WA for whom we also made a pendant. It was built around the elegant and asymmetric gemstone at its center, and the organic details in the band complement this perfectly.

Center Opal
The black opal at the center of this ring has a lovely organic shape, with one side more rounded, while the other has a straighter edge. It’s held in a four-prong setting made of 18k yellow gold that seems to grow up around the edges of the stone as the natural extension of the organic band.
Although its name suggests something darker, this beautiful stone actually exhibits a wide range of colors including rich reds, deep blues, and vivid greens, depending on the angle it’s viewed from. A similar opal is used in the pendant we also made for this client, and this creates a special link between the two pieces.
Band Design
The overall shape of this band is squared, although it’s dominated by the organic patterns and textures that are engraved on its surface. The swirling designs introduce floral elements, building on the asymmetry of the center stone to create an intriguing and beautiful network of graceful lines.
In order to accommodate the large opal at the top but still provide a comfortable fit, the shank tapers quite dramatically, angling down sharply towards the bottom where it becomes a relatively narrow, but still textured band. It is a truly dramatic and elegant piece, and we can work with you to customize it in any way you choose until it’s the perfect reflection of your vision.

3D design review
After you accept the estimate and make a down payment, we create a 3D CAD model and rendered views. Revisions within the initial design parameters are included; changes to materials or their amounts are re-estimated.
Physical model
A full-size wax model can be made to review scale, shape and proportions before production. It can be viewed in a showroom or shipped to you.
Approval and production
The design is approved before production begins. Your designer confirms the schedule, and our jewelers make, set and finish the piece.
Quality
Our custom jewelry follows design and construction standards for metal thickness, weight, stone support and setting security.
- Structure and support
- The setting must have enough metal to support the stones and hold its shape through everyday wear. If an area needs more support, we address it before production.
- Diamond and gemstone selection
- We help you choose stones for your custom design, reviewing cut, color, clarity, consistency and fit. Your budget guides these choices; our standards for materials and craftsmanship remain the same.
- Final inspection
- Before completion, we review each custom piece for proportion, comfort, stone security and finish.

Coverage conditions
For Joseph Jewelry custom pieces, coverage begins with your signature. To keep it active, Joseph Jewelry must inspect and sign for your piece every six months and perform recommended repairs and maintenance.
Repairs due to normal wear and tear are the owner's responsibility. Damage, abuse or alterations can void coverage. Customers outside Washington pay shipping both ways for inspections or repairs, plus applicable duty or customs fees.
