This gorgeous pendant features a freshwater pearl carved to resemble a cracking egg, with a sterling silver turtle emerging from one side of it. It’s part of the Galatea collection we carry here at Joseph Jewelry, and it’s a perfect example of the way this designer is known to utilize traditional materials in unconventional ways.
Pieces by Galatea often explore organic themes, and they make use of light to help enhance the natural beauty of the materials. We are proud of our long-standing relationship with the designer, and you can visit our Bellevue Location anytime to view or try on this and other wonderful pieces.
Central to the pendant is a 10.5mm freshwater pearl that’s carved on one side to resemble a cracking egg. This is accomplished through a series of angular grooves that extend across the face of the pearl from the uneven edge on the end. The carving also gives the pearl a slightly elongated look that makes the egg-like appearance that much more realistic.
The pearl as an egg is oriented to be lying on its side thanks to the metal ring that emerges from it to serve as a bale. This ring is slightly angled as well, producing a look of dynamic balance when the pendant is worn. Pendants
Emerging from the uneven end of the pearl is a baby sea turtle formed from sterling silver. The turtle is carved in exquisite detail, and certain features are highlighted by the use of black antiquing. This detail also adds to the contrast between the silver turtle and the silky white pearl, helping to make clear the separation between the two elements of the design.
The turtle is pushing its way out sideways, with its back to the viewer when the pendant is worn. This adds to the overall sense that an event has been frozen in time, and that the turtle will eventually free itself from the egg.
