Cut
The quality of a diamond’s cut is what ultimately determines the brilliance and fire of a diamond. This is because the cut involves the angles and symmetry that control how much light reflects and refracts within the diamond.

Ideal
This is the most perfect cut available. These diamonds return the optimal amount of light in the upward direction and have the most desirable dimensions.
Excellent
This grade is at the top of the cut scale near Ideal, with specifications emitting almost perfect brilliance and fire. These rare diamonds are in the top 3% of all cut diamonds.
Very Good
In the top 15% of all cut diamonds, this high quality cut refracts almost as much light as Ideal, but is usually a more affordable option.
Good
This cut is still high quality and reflects most light that enters it. These are in the top 25% of all cut diamonds and are much more affordable than the top tier of cuts.
Fair
These diamonds are cut to maximize carat weight more than light return, although the quality is good and these diamonds reflect most light.
Poor
Not carried by Joseph Jewelry.
Clarity
Clarity refers to the level of internal and external purity of a diamond. Impurities, or inclusions, are like little birthmarks, usually only noticed when under a microscope. They are caused by minor chemical blips that occur during the diamond’s formation. Blemishes are flaws on the exterior of the diamond. Very rarely do blemishes or inclusions affect the beauty or structure of a diamond.

FL (Flawless)
These diamonds are absolutely flawless and extremely rare.
IF (Internally flawless)
There are no impurities on the inside of the diamond, although there may be a barely noticeable blemish on the exterior that can only be seen under magnification.
VVS1 - VVS2 (Very very slightly included)
It is extremely difficult to find internal inclusions under magnification, though there are a few. Blemishes may be present.
VS1 - VS2 (Very Slightly included)
There are small inclusions that can barely be seen under 10x magnification, and blemishes may be present as well.
SI1 - SI2 (Slightly Included)
The inclusions and blemishes are visible under magnification, but are probably not obvious to the naked eye.
I1 - I3 (Included)
Not carried by Joseph Jewelry.

Color
Color is the unchangeable natural color present in a diamond. The brilliance (light and dark brightness) and fire (reflected spectrum of colors) is best emitted from the most colorless diamonds. The certification rating determines how much or how little natural color is included in the diamond, determining its value as a prism of refraction.

D
This is extremely rare and expensive, but it is the most icy white/colorless.
E
These rare, top-tier diamonds show minute traces of color that only experienced gemologists are able to see under extreme magnification.
F
Only the smallest traces of color can be seen under a microscope by a gemologist in these diamonds. This is still considered colorless.
G
This diamond is nearly colorless, and color can only be detected when compared to a higher color grade diamond.
H
Just behind G, this diamond straddles the near colorless and the slightly colored. It is a very good value diamond.
I
This diamond is barely colored and can be considered a good value.
J
Close behind the I grade, this diamond is just barely a stronger color.
