Mokume Gane
This band is made up of a combination of 14k rose gold, 14k palladium white gold, and sterling silver. To create the lovely organic patterns in the ring, these three metals were forged and blended using a special technique first developed in Japan hundreds of years ago called mokume gane.
No two mokume gane pieces are exactly alike, but the client did share pictures of rings that he liked with us so we could see the kind of pattern and color combinations he wanted for his. Using the same metals and forging technique generally produces an 80% match for this type of piece, which means you will always have a truly one-of-a-kind ring while still getting the look you desire.
The band itself is flat and 10mm wide, creating a strong, masculine look. It also features a sandblasted finish, and the mokume is oxidized and etched with acid as well to darken the sterling silver portion. Mokume Jewelry
Accent Diamonds
The client also wanted to work some small flush set diamonds into his ring somehow, and after some discussion, we settled on three princess cut stones of graduated size set diagonally across the band. These provide a strong contrast to the rich colors of the mokume pattern, and they add just enough sparkle without taking over the piece.
Incorporating gemstones of some kind into your wedding band is a great way to create a link to the woman’s rings as well. Even if you don’t want to have the gems on the outside as this client did, you can still include them by having them set on the inside of the band, in a spot that only you and your partner know about. Details
To reduce color fading, avoid friction against any surface. Avoid wearing your mokume ring during exercise, construction work, gardening, or other abrasive activities. When owning a mokume gane ring with oxidization, avoid chlorine or other similar chemicals as they eat away the patina.
