We discussed his options with him through the online workroom we set up to manage his project, and he also stopped by our Bellevue, WA showroom in person to continue the conversation with our team. Once we had a good idea of what he was looking for, we developed a unique design in CAD, and he was able to provide feedback on these models until he was sure every detail was perfect.
Sapphire Center
At the top of this ring, a 1.13 carat round yellow sapphire is bezel set in unplated 14k palladium white gold. The flush setting leaves the top of the stone at the same level as the surrounding metal, which keeps it protected from the hazards of everyday wear. It also helps stops the stone from overpowering the design while still showing off its gorgeous sparkle.
The choice of a yellow stone had special significance for the client, as his initial choice for the center was amber. As that type of gem is quite soft, it’s not an ideal choice for use in fine jewelry, but the client was happy to have the sapphire alternative, which worked in the color he wanted to use in a form that would hold up well over time. Hand Engraving
About one-third of the way down each side, an inverted V begins, widening as it moves down until the space between the grooves covers nearly the entire surface of the ring across the bottom. This space is filled with intricate hand engraving in a pattern that was based on the designs found on old Norse and Viking jewelry. That was another element that held special meaning for the client, and he provided samples of the kind of design he was hoping for. Hand Engraving
Contrasting Finishes
To help highlight the separation between the two sections of the ring, a distressed brushed finish is applied to the top and the outside of the V, while the engraving within the V is polished to a high shine. This use of finishes also helps to enhance the shine of the sapphire at the top thanks to the way the stone’s sparkle contrasts with the rough surface of the surrounding metal.
