This designer is known for innovative uses of conventional materials, which often imbue their pieces with a whimsical quality. The use of light and organic overtones are common themes as well, and pieces by Galatea are frequently seen as pushing the boundaries of what is possible in fine jewelry design.
The main body of this pendant is in the form of a dolphin suspended mid-jump and made of sterling silver. The dorsal fin is the highest point on the dolphin, and it also doubles as a bale, with a hole in the side that allows the chain to pass directly through. Moving forward from that point, the dolphin’s body curves downward in anticipation of reentering the water.
This leaves the dolphin’s nose nearly even with its tail, which is poised directly below the dorsal fin. The elegant lines of the dolphin’s curved body impart this piece with a dynamic movement, thanks to the sense that the animal has been caught in the midst of a dramatic act. Pendants
Suspended from the tip of the dolphin’s tail is a 10mm freshwater pearl that’s been carved in an organic pattern reminiscent of waves. The subtle contrast between the silvery shine of the metal and the silky white surface of the pearl provides for a clear separation between the two areas of the piece, and the system of wavy grooves that continue all the way around the pearl add greatly to the organic overtones of the design while also helping to highlight the pearl’s natural and complex beauty.
