This lovely pendant features a freshwater pearl carved to resemble an egg, with a sterling silver penguin chick emerging from the top. It’s a piece from our Galatea collection, and you can view this and other similar pieces by the designer any time you stop into our Bellevue, WA showroom.
Galatea jewelry is known for the innovative ways the designs incorporate light and organic themes. They typically include traditional elements but combined unconventionally to produce pieces that push the limits of fine jewelry design through creativity.
The main portion of this pendant consists of a 10.5mm freshwater pearl that’s carved to resemble an egg. The zig-zagging grooves that run down the sides of the pearl originate at a jagged top edge, which is also where the penguin figure emerges. These cracks are small details that have a significant impact on the overall appearance of the piece, as they lend authenticity to the organic nature of the design. Hand Engraving
The penguin chick figure emerging from the pearl is made of sterling silver, and it’s carved in exquisite detail. Those details are also highlighted through the use of black antiquing on certain areas, and that both clarifies the design and produces a more realistic looking penguin form. The black covers the head and back of the wings, and the chest is polished but delicately detailed to create the look of feathers. Pendants
The pendant attaches to the chain through a simple loop that emerges from the top of the penguin’s head towards the back. The placement of the loop forces the pendant to hang with the penguin figure slightly pushed forward, and this helps enhance the feel that it is working to free itself from the egg. The dynamic nature of the design is reinforced by the way the penguin figure’s wings are spread, as it stretches them in an attempt to break away.
