For your active lifestyle, low profile rings in a durable metal with a diamond center stone are the best choice. This can be a solitaire, halo, cluster, or classic design. 

Diamond is the hardest and most durable gemstone with sapphire following as a close second. For a truly secure center gem, a bezel setting is best, or at least four prongs holding the gem in place. 

What is the most durable metal for an engagement ring?

Platinum is the longest lasting metal and will keep your diamonds most secure. All gold shades are great as well, although white gold may require maintenance to stay a crisp white. 

Accent diamonds are wonderful and usually very secure with the right setting style. Just keep in mind, the more diamonds you have on your ring, the more you have to be able to keep up on maintenance. It's not indestructible ;)

Have it checked by a jeweler every 6 months and take it off for weightlifting and other activities with your hands so that the metal stays structurally sound- you don't want to lose your center stone!
