Bandeau

ban·deau | ban-ˈdō

noun

A narrow band, worn low, which encircles the forehead as a head ornament

A bandeau is a narrow band, worn low around the forehead, which encircles the head and is worn as a decorative head ornament. While you might think of bandeaus as more modern boho-style headbands made of fabric or a common athletic accessory, the tradition of wearing bandeaus spans centuries and cultures and the items have been made of a variety of materials over the years. The tradition of wearing headbands began around 475 BC when both Greeks and Romans would adorn their heads with hair wreaths on special occasions that were made of silver and gold and contained precious jewels. Jeweled bandeaus regained popularity in the early 20th century, even at a time where many headbands were made of lace or other intricate fabrics. Today, jeweled bandeaus remain a symbol of social status and elegance, with many British Royals choosing to wear these headpieces on special occasions such as weddings and official Royal events.
