Old European Cut

old eu·ro·pe·an cut | ˈōld yu̇r-ə-ˈpē-ən kət

noun

A round antique diamond cut, known for their chunky faceting and small table

The Old European Cut of diamonds was a popular method of cutting diamonds in the late 19th and early 20th century, generally between 1890 and 1930. This antique diamond cut creates a small table and chunky faceting that is often associated with antique gems of that time. This type of cut grew in popularity during the Art Deco era when geometric patterns and simple shapes were increasingly popular in fine jewelry. The heavy crown, small table, and high overall depth give OEC diamonds a distinctive look that is still sought after today in those who collect or deal in antique jewelry. Diamonds are no longer cut in this fashion as more modern techniques have been developed to better emphasize the natural elements of a diamond.
