White gold is an alloy of gold and nickel that sometimes may also include zinc or palladium. The final coating of white gold is often rhodium to provide the silvery look that is unique to the material. When not plated, white gold with have a light champagne-like color. Fully coated, white gold will look silvery. Because of the plating process, white gold often needs to be replated periodically to maintain the silvery look. These pieces, however, are considered highly durable when crafted with 14k or 18k gold and are considered good fits to hold gemstones in the case of engagement rings.
