Rhodium Plating
Rhodium plating is a white metal finish used to brighten the surface of jewelry. At Joseph Jewelry, we most often use it to restore or create a whiter appearance on gold jewelry. It is not the same as gold plating. Gold plating adds a layer of gold in a yellow, rose, or white-gold-colored finish. Rhodium plating adds a layer of rhodium to create a bright white surface.
This service is commonly used on white gold, but it can also be applied to yellow gold when the goal is to give the piece a whiter appearance. The reason for plating matters, because the underlying metal still affects how the piece should be maintained over time.

What Rhodium Plating Does
Rhodium plating gives jewelry a brighter white finish. On white gold, it refreshes the crisp surface color that wears down through normal use. On yellow gold, it can be used when a client wants the piece to appear whiter rather than yellow. In both cases, the rhodium is a surface layer, not the metal underneath.
That distinction is important. Rhodium changes the appearance of the surface, but it does not change the base metal of the piece.
Why Rhodium Plating Wears Away
Rhodium plating is not permanent. It wears down gradually, especially in areas that receive the most friction. Rings usually show this first because they are handled constantly and come into regular contact with skin, surfaces, soaps, and everyday abrasion.
When the plating wears, the underlying metal begins to show through again. On white gold, that usually means the piece looks warmer or less bright. On yellow gold, it means more of the yellow base color starts to return.
How We Approach the Process
Each piece has to be prepared properly before plating. At Joseph Jewelry, we do not treat rhodium plating as a quick dip without inspection. The jewelry first needs to be cleaned thoroughly, and the surface has to be evaluated so the finish can be applied correctly.
If the piece has loose stones, worn areas, or damage that should be addressed first, we identify that before moving forward. A fresh plated finish should not be used to cover structural issues.
General Process
- We clean the piece and remove buildup from the surface.
- We inspect the jewelry for wear, loose settings, or other visible issues that should be addressed first.
- We prepare the surface so the rhodium finish can be applied properly.
- We apply the rhodium plating.
- We complete the final finishing so the piece returns with a clean, bright surface.
When Rhodium Plating Makes Sense
Rhodium plating makes sense when white gold has lost its bright white finish and needs to be refreshed. It can also make sense when a yellow gold piece is intentionally being given a white surface appearance. In either case, the service should be done with a clear understanding that the white look comes from plating, not from a permanent change in the base metal.
That is why rhodium plating should be viewed as maintenance or surface finishing, not as a metal conversion.
Rhodium Plating Compared with Gold Plating
Gold plating and rhodium plating should be discussed separately. Gold plating adds a gold-colored surface. Rhodium plating adds a bright white rhodium surface. They may both be plating services, but they are not interchangeable in purpose or appearance.
At Joseph Jewelry, we think this difference should be explained clearly so the client understands what is being added to the piece and what result to expect over time.
Long-Term Expectations
Because rhodium plating is a surface finish, future maintenance is part of the decision. Pieces that are worn often will need the finish refreshed from time to time. The frequency depends on the jewelry type, how it is worn, and how much friction the surface receives.
A properly plated piece can look significantly brighter and cleaner, but it should still be understood as a finish that will wear with use and eventually need to be renewed.
