Grading is the process of evaluating and assigning results to a diamond or gemstone. Completed by a gemologist from an independent laboratory, grading is the means by which sellers can assign value and sell a stone. The criteria by which a stone is graded depends on the type of gemstone, and will also involve comparison with what are considered “master stones”. Grading standards were first introduced in the 1930s by GIA with the Four Cs method of grading diamonds. This method remains the standard by which all diamonds are graded today, ensuring a consistent standard that all buyers and sellers can recognize globally. The four C’s include color, clarity, cut and carat. This is applied to most types of gems now.
