Depth

depth | ˈdepth

noun

The distance from a gemstone's table to its culet (top to bottom)

Precisely measuring odd shapes of jewelry and watches can be a challenge - to say the least. Specifically depth is deemed to be the distance from the front to the back of the piece; or, the measurement of the item horizontally, at a ninety degree angle to the object’s width. The depth may also look like the measurement from a gemstone's base to its culet (the top-most point to bottom-most point). The basic formal for assessing jewlery measurements of three-dimensional items is: Height x Width x Depth. However, one should be aware that the distinction between depth and width may be perplexing, and therefore, it may be helpful to pretend you’re surrounding your piece of jewelry with a box or cube. Then, pretend to measure the box or cube by measuring the height, then the width, and then the depth (from front to back). In regards to jewelry with stones, be sure to first measure the width and depth of the setting, not merely the overall object. In regards to watches, be sure to first measure the width and length of the case and then the length of the entire band. All in all, depth provides a strong focal point in a jewelers presentation.
