Double Prong

dou·ble prong | ˈdə-bəl prȯŋ

noun

A jewelry setting in which each prong contains another prong alongside it

This jewelry setting is used because it offers additional security for the gemstone it holds, while giving a vintage look to the piece. Double prongs are typically pairs of single claws and are used when the shape of the gem stone is rounded or the corners are cut in such a way that the additional security is beneficial. This includes emerald cuts, radiants cuts and cushion cuts for diamonds. The balance of a double prong (or double claw prongs) is such that the piece looks better balanced and the intricate and likely very delicate corners of the gem are better protected than they would be in a single prong setting.
