Lab Diamond

lab di·a·mond | ˈlab dī-(ə-)mənd

noun

A diamond that was created through a controlled laboratory process

Lab diamonds, also known as synthetic or cultured diamonds, are those that are created through a laboratory process, often in highly controlled settings. Chemically and physically, lab diamonds are identical to naturally found diamonds and are considered 100% authentic based on the primary criteria by which diamonds are evaluated. This makes them more affordable than natural diamonds. The first reproducible process of creating synthetic diamonds was recorded in 1954, based on research performed in the US, the Soviet Union, and Sweden. This resulted in the chemical vapor deposition process and high-pressure, high-temperature processes for creating lab diamonds. Since then, the detonation method was developed in the 1990s and ultrasound technology has recently been found to work in isolated cases.
