Low-Profile

low pro·file | ˈlō prō-ˌfī(-ə)l

adjective

A ring that has a low-set center stone

A low-profile ring is one that has a center stone with a low setting. Instead of a high profile ring where the stone sits well above the setting, a low-profile stone is flush with the metal around it, and is tight against the finger. These rings are popular in industries or professions in which the wearer is required to use their hands frequently or wears gloves much of the day, to reduce the risk of the ring snagging or sticking to anything. These rings are designed not to have the edges or points that a high-profile ring does and therefore they are much safer to wear in these situations. The trade-off to the reduced risk to the stone is that it will not have the same level of brilliance as comparable stones in higher settings.
