Lever Back

le·ver back | ˈle-vər bak

noun

An earring back that uses a clasp

A lever back earring is one that uses a clasp to hold the earring in place. These types of earrings are known for their curved ear wires and are used because they are generally considered easy to wear, sturdy against daily use, and are effective for attaching dangling earrings of different sizes. Snap-back and key earrings are similar to lever backs and have been used since Ancient Greece. There are several types of lever back earrings used today, including diamond earrings that use lever backs to protect the earring from falling off the ear. Hoop earrings also commonly use lever back enclosures. These enclosures are often made from silver, gold, or wire. Because they are hard to lose, they provide added security, especially for expensive earrings.
