Locket

lock·et | ˈlä-kət

noun

A hinged case, usually in the shape of an oval or heart, which can be opened or closed and usually contains a photograph or memento

A locket refers to any of a number of different hinged cases, pendants, or other keepsakes that hang from a chain around the neck. They are typically in the shape of an oval, heart, or recognizable shape that is important to the wearer and typically open to reveal a photograph or other memento such as a locket of hair or piece of paper. They are frequently given as gifts and may be given to friends, family members, or romantic partners on birthdays, weddings, Valentine’s Day, or other holidays. Historically, they were also given at funerals as a memento of the deceased in the 19th century. They may also be on a chain around the wrist as a bracelet.
