Lost Wax Process or Casting

lost wax pro·cess or cast·ing | ˈlȯst waks prä-ˌses ər ka-stiŋ

verb

A casting process where a carved or cast wax original is encased in clay or other investment, before being melted at a high temperature, and replaced with molten metal

The lost wax casting process involves creating a carved or wax cast that is wrapped in some other high-temperature resistance casing. This element can then be melted at a high temperature and once removed, be replaced with molten metal of choice - gold, silver, or something similar. Lost wax casting is one of the oldest casting methods currently used, dating back to Ancient Egypt. This allows for an exceptionally high level of detail and control over what the finished cast item looks like. Today, the lost-wax casting process can be augmented with modern technology, including digital design and 3D printing. This shortens the time to cast new pieces and ensures greater accuracy in the final piece.
