Moonstone

moon·stone | ˈmün-ˌstōn

noun

A transparent, slightly iridescent, milky white variety of feldspar with white or light blue opalescent spots

Moonstone is a type of feldspar. That means it is an opalescent gemstone that can be found in a number of different colors, most often milky white with bits of blue in it. Other colors that can be included are green, yellow, pink, and even gray. Some moonstones can appear darker and almost brown as well. The reason moonstones are so popular is that the light shifts these colors across the stone through adularescence, with clarity ranging from almost completely transparent to opaque. Moonstone is found in several locations around the world, but the highest regarded is from India and Sri Lanka, with blue moonstone being the most valuable, only found in Sri Lanka.
