Morganite is a specific type of beryl that has a pink or rose tint to it. It is sometimes also called pink beryl or pink emerald. The gemstone was named for J.P. Morgan, who famously supported the arts and sciences, and had a big hand in supporting and helping to develop the gemstone industry at the time. Morganite crystals can be particularly large, with some found in South America weighing as much as 10 kilograms. When first mined, morganite stones are often orange in color, creating a pinking-orange or salmon hue before they are cut. The pink color is created by trace elements included in the gem, typically manganese.
