A ring is a circular band worn on the finger. Rings can be made from any material that holds its shape and resilient to daily wear, but in the case of jewelry is often made from precious or semi-precious metals that are corrosion resistant. Rings are most commonly used to indicate a relationship between two people, such as in the case of an engagement ring or a wedding ring. Additional types of rings may be used for those who are not yet engaged or for friendship. Rings related to betrothal or marriage are typically (but not exclusively) worn on the left ring finger. Rings may hold precious gems as well, with diamonds being the most common type of gem used in wedding-related rings.
