Facet

fa·cet | ˈfa-sət

noun

A plain, polished surface on a stone

A facet on a gemstone is the flat surface that’s been ground into the stone. Because of this, facets come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, can be used to augment other elements of the gem or diamond, and are often presented in groups to emphasize those other elements. There are four types of facets - crown facets, pavilion facets, table facets, and culet facets. The tablet facet is present in most gems and is the large flat area at the crown of the gem that presents into the center of the gem. Star facet is another term that may refer to those bordering the table facet when they are designed to present a star shape.
