Finishing is a process of adding the final touches to a piece of jewelry. This term loosely includes a number of different techniques, from polishing to the application of chemicals in processes such as oxidation. The goal of finishing is to drastically alter the final look of a piece of jewelry. Types of finishes include high polish or high shine finishing in which a polishing wheel is used to buff an item to a bright shine, matte finishing in which specialized equipment is used to create a matte finish on a piece, hammered finish, stipple finish, oxidation, enameling, plating, and several others.
