French jet refers to a type of black glass jewelry popularized during the Victorian Era. Often usd to signify mourning in the time, real Jet became incredibly hard to find at the time, especially due to its rise in popularity. To satisfy demand when real jet supplies were depleted, black glass was used in many pieces and came to be known as “french jet”.The materials were made in countries like Austria famous for their glass-making expertise, and then crafted into jewelry in England and France among other countries in the west of the continent. Other materials often used in these black mourning pieces included fossilized wood, vulcanite, onyx, and gutta percha.
