Matte

matte | ˈmat

adjective

A finish created by using either a chemical process or an abrasive material to scratch the top layer of the piece, creating a dull and non-reflective surface

Matte is a type of finish that can be applied to the surface of a piece of jewelry. It is designed to be dull and non-reflective, but with a specific style that matches the look and feel of the piece for the wearer. Matte finish is applied through one of two methods. The first is a chemical process that creates the rough, non-reflective surface effect. The other is a more traditional application of abrasive material to physically scratch the top layer of the piece and create a matte effect. Matte finish may also be referred to as brushed or satin finish, depending on the application and situation in which it is used. Matte can be applied to any type of metal and is frequently used for men’s rings.
