Mine Cut

mine cut | ˈmīn kət

noun

An antique diamond cut featuring a cushion or round shape and a chunkier look

A mine cut precedes the Old European cut. It has a higher crown and smaller table, deeper pavilion, and larger culet than the Old European cut, and was generally popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. It is considered the direct predecessor to the modern brilliant cut diamond, although with several visually apparent differences. Today, the mine cut is no longer widely used and such diamonds are considered antiques. They have 58 facets (similar to modern brilliant-cut diamonds) and are generally bulkier so that they would shine more brilliantly in candlelight.
