Rolled Gold

rolled gold | ˈrōld gōld

noun

An early 19th century type of gold plating

Rolled gold is a unique material that was popularized in the early 19th century. Patented in 1817 the process became a popular way to create mass produced jewelry in the Victorian era as demand increased for semi-precious pieces and costume jewelry. Rolled gold itself is a material that combines multiple elements by applying a layer of gold to a different, cheaper metal like copper or brass. By using a heat-fusing or mechanical bonding process, the two are joined together in different shapes and sizes to be used in everyday applications. Rolled gold continued to be popular into the early 20th century for non-jewelry items.
