Canary Diamond

ca·nary di·a·mond | kə-ˈner-ē dī-(ə-)mənd

noun

A vibrant yellow variation of Diamond

While most diamonds are white, canary diamonds are a beautiful shade of yellow. Canary diamonds are the most popular colored diamonds in the world. These special diamonds get their yellow hues from the presence of nitrogen in their composition. The nitrogen molecules present in canary diamonds absorb blue light, which in turn makes the diamond a dramatic shade of yellow. Canary diamonds can be a wide variety of yellows. They range from bright yellow to brownish yellow to sometimes even a brown or green color. The Gemological Institution of America rates canary diamonds based on their shade using the following descriptive terms: Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Dark, Fancy Deep, Fancy Intense, and Fancy Vivid. The brighter a canary diamond is, the more valuable the stone will be in today’s market. Because of this, canary diamonds that are rated either Fancy Deep, Fancy Intense, or Fancy Vivid, hold the most value.
