Tapered

ta·pered | ˈtā-pərd

adjective

A piece that becomes gradually smaller toward one end

Tapered rings are those that become gradually smaller toward one end versus the other. Many engagement rings are tapered to emphasize the stone in some way. The use of fluid or wavy lines is an effective way to accentuate the head and the solitaire stone displayed there. Tapered rings may narrow toward the head or away from the head depending on the type of shank and the support needed. It is most common for the tapering to occur on either side of the head to draw attention to the center stone and emphasize the size and quality of this element of the ring. There are several options available, however, which can also impact other elements of the ring’s construction.
