A dulled luster or finish caused by a thin deposit of dirt which discolors the surface of metal and is easily removed

Tarnish can sometimes refer to the reaction between metals and other chemicals that discolor the surface. The most notable is silver, which reacts to sulfur. The silver sulfide can be removed with a proprietary cleaning product and gentle abrasion.
