Partially transparent

Something that is translucent is partially transparent, meaning that some light passes through the object, but not enough to clearly see through to the other side. A gemstone that is translucent will allow only some of the light to pass through, and will be cloudy enough that it is not possible to see through to the other side. Compared to something that is fully transparent, less light shines through, while stones that are opaque allow no light through at all. While most stones are graded in part by their ability to pass light, the nature of translucency will depend on the type of stone being evaluated.
