Point
point | ˈpȯint
noun
One-one hundredth (0.01) of a carat
The term “point” is frequently used when describing gemstones, and in particular, diamonds, due to the way in which the size and weight of such stones is generally defined. One point is one-one-hundredth of one carat (.01). In terms of overall weight, a carat is equal to 0.2 grams, so a single point is 0.002 grams or two-one-thousandths of a gram. Points are a valuable tool for estimating the number of diamonds needed for a piece, in the case of pave or other applications of numerous small diamonds to a single piece of jewelry.
