A crater in Siberia, Russia that is home to the world's largest known diamond deposit
The Popigai Crater is located in Siberia, Russia and is known as the world’s largest deposit of naturally found diamonds. However, due to the remote location of the carter and because of the lack of infrastructure in the region, which is near the northern border of Russia, it has not yet been mined. The crater is 62 miles across and was created 35 million years ago. The types of diamonds found at the crater are not considered suitable as gems, and synthetic diamonds are generally believed to be stronger and harder than those found naturally, so it is unlikely that these diamonds will be mined. They were likely created by the heat and pressure of the impact of the meteorite with graphite deposits at the site.
