Proposal

pro·pos·al | prə-ˈpō-zəl

noun

An offering of marriage

A proposal is an offer of marriage made by one party to another. Wedding proposals that lead to engagements are a popular tradition in Western culture that involves several common factors. The proposer will get down on one knee and present a token, usually an engagement ring, and ask the proposee if they will accept the offer. When the offer is accepted, the ring is placed on the left ring finger of the recipient and the two are considered engaged to be married. Proposals have become more diverse and involve a varied range of different possible activities as people have grown both more creative and more open minded about what a proposal can entail, though, a ring is one of the most consistent elements, typically a diamond ring.
