noun

A member of the corundum family which come in a variety of colors ranging from white to orange to green to pink to blue to purple

Sapphire is one of the four precious gemstones, the others of which are diamonds, rubies and emeralds. Sapphires derive from the same corundum gemstone as rubies, but are defined by their color with red corundums being defined as rubies and all others being defined as sapphires. Blue sapphires are the most sought after and represent the birthstone for September. Sapphires can come in many other colors, however, including white, orange, pink, blue and green. Sapphires have a Mohs scale hardness of 9, the third hardest after only diamond and moissanite.
