A sevigne is a type of brooch worn as a bow or fastener at the top of a dress. These brooches were popular in the 17th and 18th century, and were originally popularized in Louis XIV’s court in France by the Marquise de Sevigne. The original sevignes of the time were presented as ribbons on the bodice, but they became more elaborate and complex over time, with asymmetrical designs, often adorned with pearls, gemstones and other precious materials. While the sevigne is not as common of a piece today, they are relatively common among antique pieces and some elements have been taken and used within modern necklace and brooch designs.
